    Chesapeake Angler Spadefish Trip

We made our first spade fishing trip to the Chesapeake tower. We had lines in the before 6am. It took a little while before my crew landing our first spade it was a very small one but it and few others made into the box. We did get a few that push 8lbs. It took us until 11:30am to get our limit for 5 Anglers. The fish were holding close to the structure and seem to want a larger piece of clam. The shadows did better for us than the out in the sun. I was pretty happy to get a limit of average size spades today. Getting clams is going to be tough in the next few weeks. Let the Spade Games begin and good luck to every one and tight lines

WOW!! What a Great Weekend on Reel Escape!!!!!!

    mahi1 mahi2  gaffergary!gaffers!

I have spoken to many over the past few days about the exciting start to our season down in Hatteras. This past weekend we completed moving the boat down to the island, fishing our way down from VA and then fishing the remainder of the weekend from Hatteras. I am happy to report it was a very safe trip and we are excited now to be based out of Hatteras for the next few months!!!!! We finished up the weekend with the usual coolers full of dolphin (Mahi Mahi) and Wahoo....several of the mahi approaching citation range mind you......yes this early in the season!!....see attached pics... The most exciting event of the weekend came Saturday as we hooked into a MONSTER blue marlin!!!!!. The fish immediately began ripping line from the reel as if we had lassoed a freight train. The fight was on!!. For the next 20 minutes she steady pulled line as we cleared all obstacles out of the way and made ready for the fight. After ripping several more yards from the reel, the big blue turned back toward the boat and in the process BENT the 10/0 hook at which point the hook pulled and the fish swam away........but not before giving us an exciting show for the day. The angler kept the bent hook as a souvenir for the "one that got away".....and the leader chaffed up as if with sandpaper!! At least 8 other boats out of Hatteras also hooked Blues in the same area that day, one boat hooked 2 the same day!! Point being, The area is hot early this season with Blue Marlin. If you ever wanted to have a good shot at a legendary fight of a lifetime to catch a blue this is the time!!!!!!!! we are not sure exactly how long the action will stay in the area, but its great timing right now to head on down!! Stay tuned for more exciting news from the beautiful outer banks of NC!! And call or email for available dates in the next few weeks, we still have prime weekend opportunities available......if you want to catch this tremendous marlin bite..........CALL SOON!!! From Hatteras Island, famed as the "Marlin Capital" for good reason....... Seafood News - Federal Aid Sought for Watermen, Seafood Merchants

The governors of Virginia and Maryland asked the federal government Friday to declare the Chesapeake Bay's crab population a disaster, in hope of winning congressional aid for struggling watermen and seafood merchants.

It is the first time a Virginia governor has requested such relief and comes less than a month after the state imposed strict rules intended to reduce the harvest of female crabs by 34 percent this year.

Capt Steve's Bait & Tackle Palomar Knot

Not too many people fishing today. Talked to a few guys on the beach it was a bit slow today. We should see everything steadily improving along with the weather. The blues usually come in pretty regularly this time of year. Surf fishing for black drum, red drum, and rockfish we have Delmarva modified fish finder rigs(they have been proven around here( One of the professionals who frequents the shop has used this rig concept for a long while now), Hatters Style Rigs(short snell good for casting), and regular 3 way drum rigs which are also sufficient. There are plenty of baits that will work the most popular for black drum seem to be sea clams, peelers, and cut bait( mullet and bunker). Many times for the puppy drum scale the finger mullet but in half diagonally. That's the report for today...Jimmy
PalomarKnot: Easy to tie, doesn't slip. Very dependable.
