NASCAR'S NEWMAN KEEPS EYE ON TRACK, HOT FISHING SPOTS

Just three hours before the first of two Nationwide Series practice sessions on Thursday at Talladega Superspeedway, Ryan Newman was still trying to unlock the secrets of what lay in front of him.

There was nothing wrong with the Chevrolet that he would drive for Kevin Harvick in those two practice sessions later in the day. Tony Stewart's teammate was a few miles down the road from the track, at Lake Logan Martin, trying to figure out why the bass were so slow to bite.

Stripers biting, others flounder - Jersey Shore

Striped bass fishing is off to a good start, and hopes are up for further improvement as bigger fish move in during the next couple of months. On the other hand, winter flounder fishing continues at a very low level while yet another zero has been recorded for the traditional spring mackerel run.

    Maryland Weekend Fishing Report

Just about everybody agrees that the start of the Maryland trophy rockfish season last Saturday began more with a whimper than a bang, but some of the boaters who trolled the Chesapeake's waters with massive parachute bucktails and umbrella rigs that contained a series of Sassy Shad lures connected.

Fishing improves over weekend in New Jersey

Anglers got a much-needed respite from the bad weather over the weekend as skies cleared and temperatures climbed.

There wasn't the explosion some expected but the fishing was good and most expect things to get better.

It all came together as never before. Bay and air temperatures were warming nicely, fuel prices were low enough that fishermen could afford to fill their tanks, stripers were spread out the length of Maryland's share of the Chesapeake, there was little if any breeze, and it all added up to what was likely the best opening day of Maryland's spring trophy rockfish since DNR tightened regulations nearly 20 years ago. It was a slam dunk.

In trial's dark shadow, opening day of fishing provides hope

Beautiful day. Boats with fishing rods sprouting from their tops and sides cutting deep white V's into the water. People smiling and waving.
It's opening day of the spring striped bass season, the end of winter and the beginning of another wonderful run of fishing.
So why am I so bummed out?

    South Jersey Report

Bass continue to headline the early spring season, though tautog anglers are out in force trying to land their fair share of whitechins before the season closes on May 1. The first reports of black drum entering Delaware Bay have come in, and the bay has been the spot to find keeper-sized bass as they move up into the Delaware River to spawn out

Short stripers to 27 inches are still being caught in some good numbers in the backwaters, according to Dan Sheeler of Fin-Atics in Ocean City.

    Plenty of rockfish, fewer fisherman

The people who know the bay best said there are plenty of fish in the sea - it's the fishermen who might be scarce this time around.

Outdoors: Peak rockfish trophy outlook spawns for Chesapeake

Saturday is the big day as Maryland's spring trophy striped bass season opens in the main stem of the Chesapeake.

Courtesy Photo Jim Kasper, skipper of Morning Angel, with a 35-inch striped bass taken on a white Bernie Michael Bullet Nose bucktail with 6-inch Sassy Shad added at the Bay Bridge. The fish was released.

The outlook couldn't be much better for the big day what with some big female fish exiting the spawning grounds notably the Potomac, Patuxent, Nanticoke and Choptank Rivers following a successful spawn - and others still en route to spawn.
