Commercial fishermen caught 62.9 million pounds of fish and shellfish in 2007, down 8.5 percent from 2006, according to the state Division of Marine Fisheries.

NEWPORT NEWS -- State regulators approved a one-year ban on winter crab dredging and a shortened fall crab-pot season in a drastic attempt to prevent the collapse of the economically important blue crab population. The Virginia Marine Resources Commission approved the measures in separate 7-2 votes today following debate among members that the steps will put watermen out of business.

Former President George H. W. Bush, caught and released a mammoth tarpon Saturday, April 19, 2008, while fishing in the Florida Keys near Islamorada.

Estimated to weigh 135 pounds, the gamefish was the largest tarpon Bush, 84, has ever caught.

Jimfrom Freeville, NY had three nice keepers @ 19 1/8" and Capt Charlie managed one @ 20.5" today on the Island Queen. My good friend Mark from Timonium was along and had to hold one just to help out Jim. Charlie's wife was along also! We only boated 11 fish today so the keeper ratio was much better. Three of the fish came in the last 45 minutes of the trip as the low tide slowed down.
WhileFishing on Scott Marshall's boat the Saltara in the Chincoteague Bay on 04/18/2008, Tom Jerkiewicz caught the first Flounder of the season. The Flounder was 24".
Dicky Cooper from Milford, DE had 2 short rockfish fishing the surf this afternoon caught on bunker. There were also a few sharks and skates caught. The gnats have arrived so the DRUM should be around. When the dogwoods bloom and the gnats arrive the drum are near according to famous JT Bolding. Rob Tharp from Milfor, De caught 32 flounder yesterday with 5 keepers. A lot of the fish were 18 inches one more month and they will be keepers. Capt. Lee Irwin learned this from the Virginia Game Fish Tagging Program Seminar. Looks like the bite is HOT so get out there. The water temperatures went from 52 in the morning to 62 in the afternoon. RussGallo from NJ had a great day with 4 keeper flounder QS this afternoon. He was using the EC flounder rigs, today he said the white and pink worked best for him with squid and minnows. There has to be something special as this rig has been HOT. He had a total of 21 fish. In his words "It is about time" You too can catch fish with the help of Captain Steves!

Libbyand John Laws from Berlin, Md. had a wonderful time aboard the Chincoteague View with Capt. Mike Handford. They had these 2 nice keeper flounder and had a bunch of sublegal ones too. It was a great day on the water, perfectly calm and 56 degrees.

KennyJacobson, Andy Jacob, and Keith Jacobson caught 2 keeper flounder and had about a dozen throwbacks in a great day of fishing. It seemed like pink was the best color for them. We are now going to call pink bubble gum due to some guys not wanting to fish with pink. Nice job out there guys :)
David Snyder from Chincoteague had a good time clamming today. The white bill sand clams, Chincoteague Clams are the best. There are also some crabs being caught in the Assateague Channel and the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. We will be open at 7am tomorrow.
Tonightwe got in Berkely Gulp ALIVE quarts and Pints. We had some 4 inch swimming mullet teamed up with the chartruce EC flounder rig catch 31 flounder with 6 keepers today. Get out there the fishing is good :)
