The builder of center console catamarans has also been evicted from its manufacturing facilities by Twin Vee's founder, Roger Dunshee, who says the company still owes him US$200,000 in back rent. Fishing line is one of the most important tools in the sport.

Trouble is, it needs to be changed regularly - leaving the problem of what to do with the old stuff.

My Way News - Miami Boat Show draws dreamers, bargain hunters

One of the world's largest boat shows is gracing the docks of Miami Beach this weekend, which means it's time to forget about the recession and dream like it's 2005.

Hundreds of yachts and smaller boats are displayed as part of the Miami International Boat Show in the Indian Creek waterway in Miami Beach, Fla., Friday, Feb. 13, 2009. One of the world's largest boat exhibitions, the show is a five-day event featuring yachts, powerboats and marine accessories. (AP Photo/Alan Diaz)

FISHING REPORT

Dr. Julie Ball reports anglers are working hard for their catches, finding decent-sized stripers - 30 to 44 inches - just off the coast, with beehives of birds often giving up the location. Big schools of larger rockfish are loitering in deeper water from 6 to 15 miles offshore. Targeting striped bass past the 3-mile demarcation line is illegal. If striped bass are boated and released past this limit, they will not qualify for a release citation from the Virginia Saltwater Fishing Tournament.

District of Columbia Seafood Company, Owner and Employee Plead Guilty to Federal Trafficking Charges

A fish wholesaler, its owner and an employee have all pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia for the illegal purchase and sale of striped bass from the Chesapeake Bay and Potomac River from 2003 through 2007, the Justice Department announced today.

Cannon Seafood Inc., its owner and president Robert Moore Sr. of Falls Church, Va., and Robert Moore Jr. of Ashburn, Va., each pleaded guilty to one felony violation of the Lacey Act. The Act prohibits individuals or corporations from creating false records for fish, and from transporting, selling, or buying fish harvested illegally.

Under the terms of the plea agreement, Cannon Seafood has agreed to pay a fine of $80,000 and pay $28,000 in restitution to the congressionally established National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF). Moore Sr. has agreed to pay a $40,000 fine and pay $15,000 in restitution to the NFWF and Moore Jr. has agreed to pay a $30,000 fine and pay $10,000 in restitution to the same foundation. The court set a sentencing date of May 8, 2009, at 9:30 A.M.

A shortage of hands

Amid growing demand for temporary guest workers nationwide, only one of Maryland's 21 seafood processing plants was able to get visas to bring the foreigners into the country this year. If Congress does not move quickly to make more available, other processors say they won't open this spring. And the loss of a year's income, several say, means that they probably would shut their businesses for good.

Watermen Applaud Illegal Rockfish Ring Bust

ABC 7 News - Watermen Applaud Illegal Rockfish Ring Bust

The bust of an illegal rockfish ring in southern Maryland has watermen wondering how the bust will impact the local industry.
According to court documents, the watermen and a seafood dealer are accused of buying and selling 600,000 pounds of rockfish or striped bass between 2003 and 2007. The fish, if sold legally, would have been worth between $3 and $7 million.
It's the largest Chesapeake fish poaching case ever and one of the Chesapeake Bay's leading fishery experts says it's an important bust.

Don't let watermen pack the fishing regulation panel

John Miller, a Newport News Democrat, has introduced a seemingly innocent bill, SB1087, which passed the Senate unanimously and this week begins its House journey. The goal of the bill is to expand the VMRC from eight members to 10, and to add two watermen to the panel.

There is already plenty of opportunity for people affected by regulation to be heard. This legislation would upset the balance of the commission and shift it too far toward the interests being regulated. In other words, because they didn't like the jury's ruling, the watermen want to build a new jury.

Rockfish sting hits three in Va.

Eastern District court records under seal until recently show that area watermen fished out of season using submerged nets for striped bass. They also altered and reused fish tags and sold illegal catches on the black market.

Kenneth Dent, who owns property at 2014 Cherry Hill Road, and Jerry Decatur Jr. and Jerry Decatur, both of Stafford, were served with search warrants in 2007 at the conclusion of a federal investigation conducted over several fishing seasons beginning in 2003.

Commercial Fishing for Striped Bass? - Valley Courier

Let’s get right to the point! The states of Maine, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and New Jersey recognize the importance of protecting striped bass status as a game fish from both a recreational and revenue generating point of view. Legislation is currently pending in Massachusetts to accomplish the same goal. Connecticut has protected this migratory fish for years and now its population has rebounded but not necessarily stabilized. For now, recreational anglers are entitled to a 28-inch, two-fish per day creel limit set by the Connecticut DEP.
